The civil construction sector in Italy absorbs 35% of final energy consumption and is the one in which the most significant results can be obtained in terms of energy saving. In fact, more than half of the buildings present consumption of air conditioning triple those required by current regulations for new buildings.

Sensitive improvements toefficiency energy are possible in terms of electricity consumption, starting with lighting. A very interesting sector that opens up is that of smart grids in response to the strong penetration ofrenewable not programmable, activating interventions of Demand Response is Demand Side Management.

The energy savings in buildings it depends a lot on the quality of the buildings themselves, which if they were not designed to be efficient, they can be renovated with criteria energy efficiency ed eco-efficiency.

LEEDLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design - it is for example a voluntary green building certification system applied in over 140 countries around the world, including Italy. The LEED standard was born in America by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit association with more than 20 thousand members and aims to promote a global approach to sustainability, giving recognition to virtuous performance in key areas of human and environmental health.

The LEED standard, developed by USGBC and also present in Italy thanks to the work of GBC Italy who created a local version, indicate the requirements for building environmentally sustainable buildings, both from the energy point of view and from the point of view of the consumption of all the environmental resources involved in the construction process.

LEED is a flexible and articulated system that provides differentiated formulations for new buildings (Building Design & Construction - Schools - Core & Shell), existing buildings (EBOM - Existing Buildings Operation & Maintenance), small houses (GBC Italia Home), for urban areas (ND - Neighborhood) while maintaining a coherent basic approach between the various areas.

The certification constitutes an independent third party verification of the performance of an entire building (or part of it) and / or urban areas. There LEED certification, internationally recognized, states that a building is respectful of the environment and that it is a healthy place to live and work.

THE competitive advantages for those who adopt the LEED standards, whether they are professionals or companies, they can be identified above all in the great final quality of the product, in the considerable savings in management costs that these buildings allow to obtain when compared with traditional buildings and in the certification by an institution third.

There LEED certificationin fact, it provides the market with a shared approach, on which to base the choices and a measurable standard for each aspect dealt with. It is a voluntary standard and as such it goes much further if compared with the mandatory legislation.
