Cervical acupuncture: what are the points involved and what are the advantages of acupuncture in the cervical area to relieve tension, pain and other ailments.

Does cervical acupuncture work?

L'acupunctureit is a very controversial practice among us Westerners. There are a large number of scientific studies in this regard but all of them fail to clarify with certainty and unequivocal, the real benefits of this practice.

The results of the studies, in fact, are always partial or inconclusive (yet only in 2013 there were 1500 PubMed accredited studies). Here in the West, acupuncture is considered one pseudoscience. Despite this, theacupunctureis a key component of theTraditional Chinese Medicine.

What is it about?
In the insertion of thin needles in certainpoints of the body. The images show the typical points used incervical acupuncture.

What benefits does it bring?
Cervical acupuncture should relieve pain associated with the muscular tensions typical of this area. It should prevent migraines related to cervical problems as an alternative to the classic cervical massage.

Not only. In the case of cervical spondylosis (or cervical arthrosis), acupuncture has been proposed to relieve symptoms (chronic pain from spinal osteoarthritis).

Acupuncture, in fact, is often counted among thenatural remediesto relieve chronic pain, however, also in this case it must be said that despite positive witnesses, there are no clinical tests that can support this advice.

Poor posture has a detrimental effect on the vertebrae and discs of the spine. At the top of the column are the vertebrae of the cervical area. Stress, incorrect posture prolonged for a long time, sports but also acute trauma, can trigger the formation ofossifications or osteophyteswhich in turn cause inflammation. Compounding this are factors such as overweight and obesity.

In these cases, in the event of a loss of the normal spinal curve or in the case of any suspected physiological alteration, rather than resorting tocervical gupuncture it would be advisable to evaluate a therapy with your doctor.

Chinese medicine can work alongside common clinical practice but it shouldn'tneverbe seen as an alternative. While admitting the effectiveness and benefits of acupuncture, this practice could bring only limited benefits.

In light of the few data collected in the field of medical research, cervical acupuncture should be evaluated in the same way as a massage.

Let's talk about the alleged benefits related to cervical acupuncture. The cervical area is characterized by 7 vertebrae. Neck pain can manifest itself with many symptoms such as:

  • stiffness in the neck muscles
  • headache
  • chronic fatigue
  • nausea
  • dizziness (but only when there is a cervical hernia that pushes on particular nerves)
  • hypersensitivity to light

The inserted needles, working on localized areas of the energy meridians, would go todissolve tensionsat the level of the occito-atlantoid membrane, so as to intervene directly on the muscles surrounding the seven vertebrae of this area, including the Atlas vertebra which supports the entire weight of the head.

Acupuncture would also prove useful to relieve pain related tocervical arthrosis, as well as neck pains related to incorrect posture or psychosomatic nature.

How does acupuncture work?

By improving and rebalancing the energy levels in our body. Painful obstructive syndrome, in Traditional Chinese Medicine is known asstasis of Qi and blood, modern medicine speaks of a bone thickening or the formation of osteophytes that cause generalized inflammation by increasing, among other things, the intraosseous venous pressure (with the genesis of cervical pain).

Acupuncture would promote health and well-being by acting on the flow of energies and tensions that run through our body. When these energies "stagnate" (bone thickening would be the consequence of the energetic stagnation of theqi) can cause major diseases. Chronic pain indicates a block in the flow of qi (vital energy). The basic axiom of acupuncture reads:no pain, no block. No block, no pain.

The stimulation of particular anatomical sites by means of needles (acupuncture points or acupuncture points) would eliminate the stagnation. It is up to the professional (acupuncturist) to decide the points to be treated and to do so, the more traditional rely on the analysis of the radial pulse but others may ask for diagnostic tests such as classic radiographs.
